Medicine Mama

My Story

 

 I’ve always had a passion for nature, wildcrafting herbs, and natural healing.

 

It began when I was a little girl growing up in Oklahoma. My mother had an enormous influence on me, passing along traditions and knowledge that had come through her own family. Her mother’s uncle, Tom Sanders, was known as a medicine man in the Oklahoma Territory, and an understanding of the land and its plants was carried through the generations—from my grandmother’s family, to my mother, and eventually to me.

 

My mother and I spent countless hours together in the Oklahoma countryside gathering wild fruits, herbs, and plants. She taught me what to look for, what could be eaten, and how plants could be made into foods and traditional remedies.

 

She often told me:

 

“Everything we need for good health is found in nature.”

 

Those words stayed with me.

 

I was also raised caring for horses and cattle, and those early experiences gave me a deep respect for animals, the land, and the rhythms of the natural world. As I grew older, that curiosity became a lifelong study of herbal medicine and natural healing practices.

 

Then I became a mother.

 

I carefully chose fresh, organic foods for my children and became increasingly conscious of what I put both into and onto their delicate little bodies. I began researching, growing herbs, wildcrafting, and formulating my own salves, lotions, oils, and family remedies.

 

I wasn’t trying to start a business.

 

I was simply making things for the people I loved.

 

As my children grew, other parents began asking about the remedies I was making. Friends wanted them. Then friends of friends wanted them. Over the years, what began around my own home and family quietly sprouted into an ever-growing collection of botanical preparations that people asked me to make for theirs.

 

And that is still the heart of Medicine Mama today.

 

I grow. I gather. I study. I formulate. I make things with intention and care, just as I did when I was making them only for my own family.

I don’t create products because I want something to sell. I create things people want to buy because they were worth making in the first place.
